The Mercian Team events began in 1984, when Jan Williams of Wolverley (then Stourbridge) Riding Club invited representatives from Affiliated Riding Clubs in an area roughly defined as being `along the M5` to an informal meeting at which The Mercian Group was formed.
The original aims were to:
– avoid clashes of show dates by Riding Clubs
– exchange schedules and information with other Clubs across the Area
– foster inter-club competition at a level below official Riding Club Area level, which was felt to be getting beyond the reach of many of the riders that local Riding Clubs cater for.
Whilst the original aims of sharing information still applies, the inter-club competition became the key driver. Clubs now compete for a trophy awarded to the Club amassing the most points across the season at Mercian events.
Each of the participating Clubs hosts one team competition every year and as many disciplines as possible are covered across dressage, show jumping, showing & eventing with the season culminating in a quiz. These are all team classes with four members making up each team and the best 3 scores going forward to an overall team result.
Each team taking part earns one point, with additional points being awarded for first to sixth places (12 for first, 10 for second and so on).
All riders must be seniors, over 18 years of age and all horses must be 4 years old and over
There are restrictions as to what level you are allowed to compete at depending on what level you currently compete with your horse. These are on the eligibility section.
There are various events held across the year with a minimum of seven competitions. The events are aimed at those competing at walk & trot to novice dressage with jumps for show jumping, hunter trials and eventing no higher than 2ft 6. The showing event is different in that four members compete in four different showing classes.
Twelve clubs currently make up the Mercian Teams; Alvechurch, Bewdley, Bromyard, Bromsgrove, Cheltenham, Copthorne, Frampton, Malvern, Shropshire South, Vale of Arrow, Worcester and Wyvern.
Mercian Team Names
Alvechurch has a number of teams which compete at Mercian events;
Alvechurch Arrows – named after the river Arrow which runs through the valley in which the village of Alvechurch sits.
Alvechurch Archers – named after Godfrey Baseley the original writer of The Archers who was born in Alvechurch.
Alvechurch Admirals – named after a style of canal narrow boat used on the British Waterways over a number of years and is linked to the Birmingham & Worcester Canal which runs through the village.
